Genetic Counseling in practice

A genetic counseling session is a very personalized procedure and aims to increase the family’s understanding of genetic testing and/or disease. A detailed family and medical history will be obtained and will be represented graphically in a “family tree”.

All the available information regarding risks, disease management and risks and benefits of further testing will be discussed. Psychological support will be offered and will focus on decision making, based on counselee’s personal beliefs. At the conclusion of the counseling session, the major topics discussed, will be summarized in a written report. The counselee may choose to share the letter with other family members or healthcare providers.
